We’ve been waiting for it, and now it’s here. The first 6-star hotel in the historic city of Cartagena de Indias, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Built on the site of the original Convento Obra Pía, Viceroy Cartagena offers 102 luxury rooms and prodigious common areas built into the colonial edifice. The Viceroy group also has 15 cabanas not far away on the Rosario islands, which are linked to the city daily by two luxury yachts. It’s a project costing over $50 million and offering levels of service and comfort never before achieved. Beyond expectations, the hotel has been transformed into a palace where your desires become reality. The building has been preserved and restored in its entirety by the colonial architectural restoration firm Barrera & Barrera, preserving the charm of the 17th-century building. With its choice of noble materials (wood, marble and gold) and pale colors, its sobriety reflects its refinement. Beyond the walls, the hotel opens its doors onto a 400-square-meter courtyard featuring a swimming pool whose elegance is matched only by its grandeur. Upstairs, a spa, a fitness center, a café lounge, a restaurant and a discotheque will enliven the daily lives of its guests. The hotel’s terrace reveals the jewel of Cartagena: a 360° view from the bar and the infinity pool. The hotel can also be the venue for large-scale receptions, with 1,250 square meters of functional space designed to accommodate over 400 guests. The hotel complex also offers membership status to 400 elected officials, who are not residents of the hotel and have access to the spa, the hotel gymnasium and the private beach club. This project propels the Getsemani district and the city of Cartagena de Indias among the jewels in the crown of upscale hotels. A new lease of life for Colombia, which now ranks among the very select list of countries with 6-star hotels.
