Southern archaeological Region
of Colombia

Cali, Popayán, San Agustín

The southern region of Colombia stretches from the valleys of the Cauca to the Andean foothills of the Huila, right up to the gateway to Amazonia. Less visited than other areas, it nevertheless reveals an ancient cultural wealth and contrasting landscapes. This territory was a major center of pre-Columbian cultures, notably around San Agustin, and retains a strong Afro-Colombian and indigenous identity. Colonial towns like Popayán bear witness to the Spanish influence, while Cali, the salsa capital, embodies the urban energy of the Andean southwest.

  • Cali: capital of salsa & lively working-class neighborhoods
  • Popayán: colonial center & religious traditions
  • San Agustín: megalithic sculptures & archaeological sites
  • Parc Puracé: active volcanoes & Paeces community territory
  • Tierradentro: funerary hypogeums & geometric paintings
