The Tatacoa desert, an hour’s drive from Neiva, is the second driest area in Colombia after La Guajira. It’s the perfect combo for nature lovers, hikers and astronomers. Discovered in 1538 by the conquistador Jiménez de Quesada, this desert, with its ochre or grey hues interspersed with the green of its cacti, is one of Colombia’s most impressive natural sites. To visit it, the best option is to spend the night in Villavieja, to discover the sites of El Cuzco and El Hoyo, and the starry sky from the astronomical observatory.
