Traveling in Colombia, a country whose beauty we strive to preserve
Traveling in Colombia isn’t about checking a box on a list. It’s above all a human experience, made of encounters, contrasting landscapes, and a rich, ancient, and vibrant culture.
Based in Medellín, our adopted city, we know better than anyone that every region of Colombia carries a history and a memory that deserve to be respected. This conviction guides the way we design our trips: traveling, yes—but traveling consciously. Our team aims to share with you our vision of responsible tourism, where every itinerary is designed to minimize its impact while maximizing human exchange: admiring beauty without damaging it, but actively preserving it; discovering without imposing, while ensuring that everyone benefits. Every step on a trail, every shared meal, every encounter becomes a respectful experience for those who call this land home.
A sustainable ambition for Colombia
Colombia is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of biodiversity, home to nearly 10% of global fauna and flora. Its territory stretches from Caribbean coral reefs to the Amazon rainforest, crossing the Andes mountain range—explaining such exceptional biodiversity.
This richness is also reflected in Colombian culture: Afro-Colombian heritage on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, Indigenous communities in the Sierra Nevada and La Guajira, Andean coffee traditions, the energy of salsa in Cali, or the modernity of Medellín.
At Terra Colombia, our ambition goes far beyond reducing the negative impacts of tourism. We aim to generate positive and lasting impact, contributing to a more responsible Colombia—one that respects its natural and human treasures.
Since 2007, we have been crafting tailor-made journeys that place environmental protection and respect for local cultures and communities at the heart of every itinerary. In 2025, our commitment was recognized with the TraveLife Partner certification, an international label dedicated to sustainable tourism.
TraveLife: international recognition
So what exactly is TraveLife?
TraveLife evaluates and rewards travel agencies that meet strict criteria regarding environmental protection, professional ethics, and social responsibility.
To be certified, an agency must meet concrete and measurable requirements: responsible company management, reduction of environmental footprint, respect for working conditions, fair collaboration with local partners, and positive contributions to communities.
This certification is based on a structured and controlled process. It ensures that sustainability is an integral part of the agency’s daily operations—not just a marketing slogan. It also helps travelers identify professionals who are truly committed to more responsible and transparent tourism. This is precisely why Terra Colombia chose this particular label: it brings credibility and recognition to a level of expertise and commitment that we continuously strive to enhance.
Our commitments at Terra Colombia
Protecting the environment
We minimize the environmental impact of our trips by selecting committed partners, promoting responsible accommodations, and encouraging sustainable practices on the ground. Beyond limiting impact, we seek to generate a positive one. We work to protect various ecosystems (natural reserves, wildlife protection, reforestation) and raise awareness among travelers about essential actions to safeguard Colombia’s unique environments.
Supporting local communities
We prioritize working with local actors: guides, drivers, artisans, families, and small independent businesses. Tourism should be a lever for local economic development and directly benefit local populations. Highlighting the traditional know-how of our partners also means ensuring good working conditions and fair, equitable compensation.
Promoting more mindful travel
We defend a vision of travel based on exchange, cultural understanding, and mutual respect. Our itineraries are designed to avoid the overuse of sites and to offer authentic experiences, far from mass tourism.
Reducing our plastic footprint
To limit waste produced during trips, we implement concrete measures from the very beginning. For example, each traveler receives a reusable water bottle at the start of their stay, helping significantly reduce single-use plastic bottles and encouraging more responsible habits throughout the journey.
Selecting committed accommodations
We prioritize accommodations that share our values of sustainability and environmental respect. We work in particular with committed ecolodges such as Mundo Nuevo Ecolodge, designed as a true laboratory of sustainable living. This establishment contributes to protecting the fragile ecosystem of the Sierra through autonomous vegetarian food production (permaculture gardens and vegetable plots), responsible water and waste management, and strong local integration with the Indigenous Wiwa community.
Color y Esperanza Foundation
Since 2023, Terra Colombia has been a partner of the Color y Esperanza Foundation, an association created in 2009 that works to support the education of disadvantaged children and teenagers in the Pacific region of Chocó.
For every traveler who sets off with us, USD 10 is donated to the foundation. Each year, a Christmas gift drive is organized for the children who benefit from the program. Travelers are invited—if they wish—to bring a small gift from their home country for children aged 3 to 9, leaving a meaningful memento of their visit to Colombia that will brighten their holiday season.
At Terra Colombia, we firmly believe that travel should never come at the expense of the host country. On the contrary, it should be synonymous with respect, authenticity, and meaningful exchange. When practiced responsibly, tourism can not only minimize its impact, but also bring genuine value and purpose to everyone involved.
