Tierradentro, nestled at the bottom of an isolated valley, is a unique archaeological site in terms of the size and number of funerary tombs on display.

Listed as aUNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, it can be reached from Popayan or San Agustin, staying in the « paece » village of San Andres de Pisimbala. The Tierradentro site features monumental statues of human figures and numerous hypogeums built between the 6th and 10th centuries.

These vast subterranean tombs (some burial chambers are up to 12 m wide), unique in North America, are decorated with motifs reproducing the interior decorations of homes of the period, and offer exceptional testimony to the social complexity and funerary rites and customs of a pre-Hispanic society that has disappeared, in a sumptuous landscape.
