The must-try Arepa de huevo from the caribbean
If you’re already familiar with the traditional Colombian arepa (a kind of corn pancake) found all over the country (and in many different forms), discover a less light version. Arepa de huevo is the same corn-based preparation that you fry once, then add an egg… and fry again. Delicious!
Cali: The marranita!
When you visit Cali, as well as sampling the tasty dishes typical of the Colombian Pacific, we invite you to sample the city’s street food. Among the various dishes, the marranita stands out: a small plantain fritter (the star of Colombian cuisine) filled with chicharrón (melting pork meat fried with the skin).
Papa rellena
A classic of Colombian street food, papa rellena is a mashed potato-based preparation that is then used to form a dough that is filled with minced meat before… ? Can you guess? Yes, before frying!
The irreplaceable empanada
A typical dish found in many Latin American countries in a variety of forms, the Colombianempanada is a true national pride. It comes in many forms: potato, meat and even fish. In the countryside, they are fried over a wood fire, giving them an incomparable flavour. It is often said that « many churches have been built thanks to the sale ofempanadas« , as it is a way for many Colombians to earn an informal income. As you can see, it’s impossible to leave the country without saying you’ve tasted it!
Never without my buñuelo
A fixture at all family gatherings in December ( Christmas festivities here are celebrated for the whole month), Colombians don’t abandon their buñuelos for the rest of the year, which are sold on almost every street corner. This cornstarch and cheese-based preparation is popular throughout the country and comes in a variety of versions (filled witharequipe, Colombian caramel, for example).
