Popayan, the White City
Nestled in the verdant meanders of the Cauca, at an altitude of 1,737 meters, Popayan is the epitome of colonial charm, with its picturesque alleyways and pretty cobbled squares. The many churches are like works of art on open display, bearing witness to the town’s religious tradition, which is still revived today during Holy Week processions.
Whitewashed facades, the town’s culinary heritage, the hot springs of Coconuco and Silvia, the neighboring village of the Guambianos, make Popayan a region not to be missed. The department is also home to Colombia’s largest archaeological site: Tierradentro, as well as the island ofGorgona, a superb national park on the Pacific Ocean.
